Home Series - Sophie Mulder - What does home mean to you?

What does home mean to you?
Home is a combination of old and new. At home, I have a lot of things that are both old and new. Chairs that came from my grandfather, and also from my grandmother, and old books that I've collected.
But I also have a lot of 'new' things in my home. I feel free to be creative, I love painting, I have a lot of new things in my home that I made myself. This makes me feel at ease and feel like myself. I don't have to think about it as much.
I'm a very positive person, it's a characteristic I'm very happy with. When I feel at ease, this reflects on my home. It's also the same when I'm on a holiday in the South of France. I've been going there since I was little, and it feels like home to me too. I know my way around town, I know the people there and I love to show people around too.
This also feels like home to me, because I recognise myself in this.
What does love mean to you?
I think everything starts with love. It can be a relationship, my relationship ended just before Summer. That's a part of love. You have to heal from this. And then you get to focus more on loving yourself. That you start to appreciate yourself. And that you are also able to discover new love. You can also fall in love with 'small things' like going on a holiday together.
I also experienced a lot of love when I just moved to my new apartment. Everyone was ready to help me out with the move. If I look around my house, I just fall in love with my new home even more, because everyone has helped me so much make this my new home. So I feel like you can also fall in love with certain 'moments in life'.
Love always plays a part in my life, whether that's a positive or a less positive one.

Can you share something that no one really knows about you?
I think something that people don't know about me is that in social situations, I find it quite difficult at times. But it doesn't look like I'm nervous at all. But from the inside I'm exploding.
What goes through my mind is: "What do other people think of me?". I think this is something that people don't know about me, because all they see is a positive person. Which I am as well, but sometimes I have to really get it out myself.

What do you admire about yourself?
What I really admire about myself is the way I can adapt myself very quickly. For example, a lot has changed in my life over the Summer and I've always been positive about it so that I could easily transition to the next phase.
That doesn't mean it has been easy, but I can adapt myself to what comes next and I usually see the positive side of things first. The result of this is that less positive experiences don't get a hold of me as much and that I can be happy more easily.
What is your motto in life?
I think the way that I can adapt myself in situations, is something that contributes to my motto in life. But what I need to be more aware of is that this also can go to: forgetting about what I want and what I really need. Because you can also lose yourself in this.
I don't necessarily have a certain motto in life, but I think it's very important for you to be able to adapt yourself, but never forget your own needs. And that what you do, really makes you happy.
