Behind The Brand: 3 Misconceptions of running a fashion label

Every week the Co-Founders of PALAVER will share their story, vision and journey in a short journal. This week: 3 Misconceptions of running a fashion label.

 

“You should do it alone” ❌ 

Doing everything by yourself seems like the most logic thing to do when you’re starting out: and most people will have to because there is simply no budget. But doing everything by yourself isn’t going to give you long term success. We need other people’s help, whether that’s knowledge, skills or mental support.  

We’re not talking about hiring an employee immediately (I mean, if you can, then that’s great!), but we’re talking about the things that are vital for your business. It’s good to know what your strengths and weaknesses are and not try and always ‘fill in the gaps’ yourself. You have to decide what decisions will help you work smarter for example having someone else help you with graphic designs for look books, stationary etc then spending hours trying to do it yourself. 

It’s OK to ask for help. But you have to know that knowledge is valuable, so if it’s not a family member, and you’re asking someone for advice on their expertise: it’s not free. The reason why someone is skilled at something or is an expert on a certain subject, it’s because they’ve gone through so many ups and downs and have invested in their knowledge themselves to get where they are today. So be careful when asking a friend for free advice.

Things you can do:

  • Invest in a coach (this can be any type of coach: mental, business or to a specific department like production or design)
  • Talk to someone who is good with budgets 
  • Hire an expert/freelancer to help you build your website

“You need to do everything at once.” ❌

Doing everything at once seems like a good idea at first because you want to make sure you have done everything before you launch your label.

But it’s actually more productive and you’re going to be more successful when you focus on a few important things in each department, and do them really well. Rather than focusing on EVERYTHING and doing an ‘Okay’ job at it.

Set goals. 

  1. 5 to 10 year plan
  2. your plan for this upcoming year
  3. your plan for this coming month

Because a lot of times when you don’t have a plan, you end up doing things that seem important at the time, but aren’t really contributing to your long term business goals.

“If you build it, they will come.” ❌

It’s a dream to have real customers wear your beautiful clothing. Your friends and family’s support is great, but that’s not going to build your label. 

In an ideal world we would only need to make beautiful things and once we launch it: it will automatically sell because you’re in love with the product yourself, why wouldn’t everyone else?

How many times have we seen things online (or offline) ourselves and really liked it, saved it, or put it on our wish-list but never actually purchased it? There’s a lot of competition out there!

But that doesn’t mean your product isn’t good or you can’t succeed because there is too much competition out there. You have to keep going, make more work, put yourself out there, invest in coaches and other experts and the ball will start rolling. 

You’ll learn whilst running your business. You don’t have to have everything perfect in the beginning, just begin and start the process.
